Book, Meet E-Reader

I admit, I’m a fan of digital content. I’ve got 30 books on my e-reader at the moment, so I could be stranded on a desert island and still not run out of reading material–until my battery runs out.

So, did you know the library has been offering e-books for awhile now? Have you tried checking any out, and if so, which device are you using to read them?

The library is now offering Freegal–the name is a contraction of “free” and “legal”–a downloadable music service. Instead of borrowing songs, like you do with downloadable ebooks and audiobooks, you download songs in MP3 format and they are yours to keep.

Each library patron may download up to 3 songs per week. Available songs are those included in the Sony Music catalog–including all Sony’s subsidiary music labels.

To get started, go to https://acpl.freegalmusic.com/users/sdlogin and type in your library card number and pin. You may search by artist or browse by artist or genre. For more information, go to http://www.acpl.info/events/freegal.pdf.

TEDxFortWayne 2012 Invites Kids to Re-Think Fort Wayne

TEDxFortWayne, the independently organized event licensed by TED, invites the area’s youth to voice their ideas, dreams, and vision for their community, country, and world via a writing and speech contest.

TEDxFortWayne organizer Craig D. Crook said, “The theme for TEDxFortWayne for 2012 is Re-Think Fort Wayne. Who better to re-think our community than those who will inherit it? We invite area youth to dream BIG and to tell us how they want our city to change and how they want to make a difference in our community.”

The contest is simple to enter. Elementary, middle school and high school students can write their dreams or record a short speech in a 3-minute video, and then submit it to TEDxFortWayne organizers. Details can be found at http://bit.ly/TEDxFWstudentContest .

Selected entries will be included in a video presented at TEDxFortWayne, and selected students may even be asked to read their entries from the TEDxFortWayne stage.

Students are asked to choose one of the following four topics and then construct a message designed to share passion and to “foster learning, inspiration and wonder”:

share your vision for our community.
explain what you’re doing to improve our culture.
tell us about your ideas for change.
show us what power really means.

Crook urges students to, “Dream big, let your passion shine through, and let us all hear your call to action. Let’s re-think Fort Wayne!”
