Keeper of the Lost Cities: Teen Review

October 26, 2012 by Katie

Review submitted by Teen Advisory Board member Scott F.

Twelve-year-old Sophie Foster has a secret. She’s a Telepath—someone who hears the thoughts of everyone around her. It’s a talent she’s never known how to explain.

Everything changes the day she meets Fitz, a mysterious boy who appears out of nowhere and also reads minds. She discovers there’s a place she does belong, and that staying with her family will place her in grave danger. In the blink of an eye, Sophie is forced to leave behind everything and start a new life in a place that is vastly different from anything she has ever known.

Sophie has new rules to learn and new skills to master, and not everyone is thrilled that she has come “home.” There are secrets buried deep in Sophie’s memory—secrets about who she really is and why she was hidden among humans—that other people desperately want. Would even kill for.

Keeper of the Lost Cities bears a striking resemblance to Harry Potter. The premise is almost the same: a powerful magical creature is sent to live among humans for his/her own protection and is destined to defeat a powerful evil. Many detail are also similar. For example, the main character has a distinguishing feature unlike any other in their culture (the scar for Harry Potter, brown eyes for this book), goes to a school where they learn to use magic, discovers a powerful item by mistake (several in Harry Potter, Quintessence in this book), and becomes enemies with the chemistry teacher. If you are a fan of Harry Potter, you may enjoy this book as well.

    There are few words

MacKinlay Kantor seems like he was a pretty great guy.  While growing up in Iowa, he added an “a” to his middle name, McKinlay, because he thought it made it more Scottish; during WWII, while riding along on some bombing missions on assignment for an L.A. newspaper, he asked to be trained and allowed to […]

    Star Readers

As a children’s and teen librarian I love helping kids find books for school. We get lots of requests, and the specifics of each one make them like little puzzles to solve. Say, for instance, that a 3rd grade girl needs a book that has an Accelerated Reader (AR) test and is listed as a […]
